Zaahen is a sustained-damage Darkin bruiser whose Cultivation of War passive stacks turn every extended fight into a lethal disadvantage for the enemy. His kit revolves around stacking Determination on enemies, then exploding their HP with a final W pull into R shockwave. He's one of the strongest late-game top laners when his Darkin healing comes online through Q.

Skills Overview

P
Cultivation of War
Cultivation of War
Passive
Zaahen's attacks and abilities against enemy champions grant him stacks of Determination, gaining bonus Attack Damage per stack. When filled with Determination, Zaahen gains increased Attack Damage and can revive.
Cultivation of War stacks Determination on enemies you damage (up to 12). Each stack grants you bonus AD (doubled at max stacks). At max stacks the enemy glows visually — this is your all-in signal. Always fight to max stacks before committing to a kill.
Q
The Darkin Glaive
The Darkin Glaive
The Darkin Glaive · Enhanced Attacks · Heal · Knock-up on Recast
Zaahen slashes twice on his next attack, dealing bonus damage and healing himself. Zaahen can recast this ability to have his next attack deal bonus damage and knock up his target.
CD: 10/9/8/7/6 · Cost: 25
The Darkin Glaive empowers your next attacks to double-strike. The recast adds a knock-up — use it on enemies trying to kite away. The heal from Q scales with damage dealt, so Q into a full stack enemy heals massive amounts.
W
Dreaded Return
Dreaded Return
Dreaded Return · Point-Click Pull · Gap Close
Zaahen stabs in a direction, damaging enemies hit, then pulls them toward him.
CD: 16/15/14/13/12 · Cost: 50
Dreaded Return stabs and yanks a target toward you. It's not a slow projectile — it's instant on hit. Use it to pull a carry off the frontline, to end kiting patterns, or to re-close gap after E dash.
E
Aureate Rush
Aureate Rush
Aureate Rush · Dash / Slash
Zaahen dashes to a location and slices around himself.
CD: 10/9.5/9/8.5/8 · Cost: 40
Aureate Rush is a short dash-slash for closing distance. Use E to gap-close, then W to pull, then Q for the double-strike combo. E → W → Q is your basic kill pattern.
R
Grim Deliverance
Grim Deliverance
Grim Deliverance · Leap · AoE Shockwave · Heal
Zaahen rises then stabs downward, damaging enemies and healing for a portion of the damage dealt.
CD: 110/95/80 · Cost: 100
Grim Deliverance leaps to target location and slams down a massive AoE shockwave. The heal is calculated off champion damage dealt — leap into a grouped fight for maximum return. Use it to close on a fleeing low-HP carry.

Gameplay

How to Play Zaahen

Zaahen's lane is about stacking Cultivation of War in extended trades, forcing opponents to fight through his Q healing, and snowballing with W pull kills.

01
Early Game
Stack Trades, Win Extended
  • E → W → Q every trade. The dash closes gap, pull brings them in, Q double-strike deals damage and heals you.
  • Never fight short trades — Zaahen loses them. Force extended fights where Cultivation of War stacks to 12 for doubled AD.
  • Don't use R at level 6 to open fights. Save it for the second rotation when they're trying to run from a losing trade.
  • Farm with Tiamat to keep the wave managed. Zaahen's strength is 1v1, not wave shove speed.
02
Mid Game
W Pull All-Ins
  • W pull a priority target whenever they step too far forward in a skirmish. The pull is instant — there's no wind-up to dodge.
  • At 12 Determination stacks your AD doubles. Track the visual glow on enemies — fight to max stacks before committing to kill.
  • R from outside the fight to land in the middle of multiple enemies for maximum shockwave healing and damage.
  • Splitpush with Tiamat → Black Cleaver. Your 1v1 is near-unbeatable post-3-items. Force the enemy to send two to stop you.
03
Late Game
Unkillable Teamfight Diver
  • In teamfights, open with E → W to pull their most important target (ADC or APC) into your team.
  • Land R on grouped enemies for full AoE healing — the more champions you hit with Grim Deliverance, the more you heal.
  • Q knock-up on recast is a CC ability. Use it to interrupt channels, dashes, or enemies trying to Flash away.
  • At max Determination stacks (12) with Conqueror also maxed, your AD is nearly double base. One Q hit at this point deletes squishes.

Teamfighting

How to Teamfight as Zaahen

Zaahen's teamfight role is to pull the enemy carry into melee range with W, stack Determination to 12, then activate R shockwave for massive AoE damage and healing.

1
Pre-Fight — Establish Flank
Before engage
01
Flank from the side to reach the enemy backline — W pull on the ADC from flank angles is nearly un-dashed.
02
E pre-positions you for the W — use the dash to get within W range of the carry before the fight breaks.
03
Let your team engage first — wait for the enemy front line to commit before W-pulling the backline.
2
Fight — Pull and Shockwave
Fight opening
01
W pull the ADC or APC the moment they're separated from their peel — instant range, no dodge window.
02
Q double-strike + recast knock-up to prevent escape — the knock-up interrupts Flash timing.
03
R when 3+ enemies are in range — leap into the center of the fight and slam for maximum healing and AoE.
3
Aftermath — Sustain and Chase
Post-fight
01
Q heals you through the chase — don't stop attacking. Your healing scales with damage dealt so the chase itself heals you.
02
W fleeing targets — the instant pull drags runners back into melee range.
03
R stragglers — Grim Deliverance can leap to the furthest low-HP champion for a killing blow.

Tips & Tricks

Advanced Mechanics & Hidden Tech

Zaahen's mechanical expression is timing Q recast for knock-up precisely when the enemy tries to escape. Missing the knock-up lets them kite out of your damage window.

Basic
Stack Determination Before All-In
Cultivation of War stacks are your win condition. Poke with auto-attacks + E dash before committing to a kill — at 12 stacks your AD doubles. Fighting an enemy at 0 stacks is just a normal duel; fighting at 12 stacks is an execution.
Basic
Q Double-Strike Heals You
The Darkin Glaive's double-hit heals you for damage dealt. In extended fights, activating Q and letting both hits connect is your sustain. Don't skip the second hit by dashing away — let Q heal you fully before repositioning.
Intermediate
W Pull is Instant on Hit
Dreaded Return has travel time to reach the target but the pull back is instant. There's no dodge window after it hits — the enemy is already yanked toward you. Use it on enemies in the middle of mobility abilities to cancel their dash.
Intermediate
Q Recast Knock-Up Timing
The Darkin Glaive's recast adds a knock-up. Use it specifically when enemies try to Flash or dash away — the knock-up interrupts the escape. Never just spam the recast, always save it for the moment they commit to an escape attempt.
Advanced
R Heal Scales with Targets Hit
Grim Deliverance's heal is calculated based on champion damage dealt. Land in the center of grouped enemies, not on a single target. A 5-man shockwave heals Zaahen to nearly full HP — a 1-man shockwave heals barely anything.
Advanced
E → W Flash Cancel
If the enemy Flashes away after your W pull starts, their Flash repositions them but W still completes. Use E dash immediately after W to close the remaining gap. The E → W → E combo can cover enormous distances.

Matchups

Counters & Matchups

Zaahen struggles against heavy poke lanes that prevent him from stacking Determination, and kite-heavy champions who can permanently outspace his W range.

Click any matchup to expand tips & how to play against them
Loses Against
Vayne
Vayne Hard
Vayne's Tumble + Silver Bolts true damage bypasses Zaahen's healing. Her kite pattern with Condemn wall-pin prevents him from stacking Determination.
Build Stridebreaker to cancel her kite. Engage with E → W to eliminate her Tumble dodge window — she can't Tumble through a W pull.
Quinn
Quinn Hard
Quinn blinds Zaahen (blind prevents Q double-strike hits), has superior mobility with Vault, and pokes from range he can't reach without blowing E and W.
Farm safely. Don't all-in until you have Trinity Force. W pull her mid-Vault — the pull cancels her dash mobility.
Malphite
Malphite Hard
Malphite's armor stacking hard-counters Zaahen's physical damage. His slow prevents Determination stacking, and his AP damage bypasses Q healing.
Rush Black Cleaver. Six Armor Shred stacks reduce Malphite's armor significantly. Extended fights still favor him — split push and avoid direct engage.
Wins Against
Garen
Garen Easy
Garen's kit requires him to stay in melee range — exactly where Zaahen excels. His Silence only delays Zaahen's combo for 1.5 seconds before Q double-strikes resume.
Let Garen engage, absorb the Silence, then Q → recast knock-up to interrupt his Judgment spin. Once Silence ends the trade swings entirely in Zaahen's favor.
Darius
Darius Easy
Darius needs to complete his Hemorrhage stack pattern — Zaahen's W pull and extended fight control prevent Darius from landing the full 5-stack bleed. Zaahen out-heals the bleed.
Engage when Darius has 0-2 stacks. W pull him when he tries to spin with E spin-away. Your healing at 12 Determination stacks outpaces his bleed damage.
Nasus
Nasus Easy
Nasus needs time to scale. Zaahen aggressively denies his Q stacking with W pulls and Q healing, keeping Nasus perpetually behind.
All-in Nasus every time your W is available. He has no escapes — W pull, Q double-strike, stack Determination freely. At 12 stacks you out-damage his Wither slow.
Team Comp

Best Synergies

Amumu
AoE Teamfight
Amumu
Amumu R groups enemies inside Zaahen's R shockwave range for maximum AoE healing from champion hits and guaranteed full damage.
Lulu
Shield/Heal
Lulu
Lulu's shields protect Zaahen during his extended trade windows and amplify his Q double-strike healing in prolonged fights.
Jarvan IV
Engage
Jarvan IV
Jarvan cataclysm traps W-pulled enemies inside the walls for Zaahen's full damage rotation at maximum 12 Determination stacks.
Malphite
Engage
Malphite
Malphite R groups the enemy backline enabling Zaahen to W-pull the carry directly into his team from the knocked-up group.
