Aatrox is a skill-dependent bruiser whose power comes from Q sweet spot precision. Hit all three Q sweet spots in a fight and you heal for massive amounts while dealing enormous damage. Miss them and you're a mediocre melee champion.

Skills Overview
P
Deathbringer Stance
Passive
Periodically, Aatrox's next basic attack deals bonus magic damage and heals him, based on the target's max health.
Q
The Darkin Blade
The Darkin Blade — Three-charge slam with sweet spot; sweet spot deals bonus damage and heals
Aatrox slams his greatsword down, dealing physical damage. He can swing three times, each with a different area of effect.
CD: 14/12/10/8/6 · Cost: 0
Q sweet spot is the center of the AoE — land all three Q's at the sweet spot for maximum damage and healing.
W
Infernal Chains
Infernal Chains — Chain that pulls enemies toward center if they don't escape
Aatrox smashes the ground, dealing damage to the first enemy hit. Champions and large monsters have to leave the impact area quickly or they will be dragged to the center and take the damage again.
CD: 20/18/16/14/12 · Cost: 0
W chains enemies — if they walk away fast enough they escape, but Flash or dash is the only reliable escape.
E
Umbral Dash
Umbral Dash — Dash that can be used mid-Q to reposition sweet spot placement
Passively, Aatrox heals when damaging enemy champions. On activation, he dashes in a direction.
CD: 9/8/7/6/5 · Cost: 0
E dash can be used between Q casts to reposition — use E to put the Q sweet spot directly on the enemy.
R
World Ender
World Ender — Transform boosting damage and healing; revives if killed during duration
Aatrox unleashes his demonic form, fearing nearby enemy minions and gaining attack damage, increased healing, and Move Speed. If he gets a takedown, this effect is extended.
CD: 120/100/80 · Cost: 0
R immediately in losing fights — World Ender's resurrection can save you if you die within the duration.
Skill Leveling Order — Max Q for maximum sweet spot damage and healing. Then E for dash CD reduction, last W.

How to Play Aatrox
01
Early Game
Q Sweet Spot Trades
- Q sweet spot is in the center — practice hitting it on minions to develop muscle memory.
- E→Q combo: dash with E mid-Q cast to reposition the slam exactly where the enemy is.
- W when the enemy uses a dash — they can't escape the chain if their dash is on cooldown.
- Build Conqueror stacks in every trade with Q autos. Full Conqueror + Q healing is your sustain source.
- Don't R early — save it for when you're below 30% HP or diving tower.
02
Mid Game
W+E Setup Combo
- W chains in the river bottleneck for ganks — the narrow path prevents escape.
- R when diving — the resurrection passive lets you tower dive safely.
- Three Q sweet spots = massive HP recovery. Start fights with Q3 first if you can combo it.
- Stridebreaker slow makes W chains guaranteed — slow them before the chain lands.
- Group for teamfights at 2 items — full Conqueror + Q healing makes you nearly immortal.
03
Late Game
R World Ender Dive
- R at the start of teamfights for maximum duration — don't save it reactively.
- Dive the enemy carry with E→W→Q combo — chain pulls them into your team.
- Q sweet spot on 3 targets simultaneously in grouped fights — each hit heals you separately.
- R resurrection saves you from burst — dive in, die, revive, continue fighting.
- Black Cleaver + Q sweet spot on armor-stacked tanks strips their resistance rapidly.
Teamfighting
How to Teamfight as Aatrox
Aatrox in teamfights dives the carry with E, chains with W, and spam-Q's for sweet spot healing. R immediately going in for maximum duration and potential resurrection.
1
Engage — E + W Chain
Initiation
01
R before engaging — World Ender gives bonus damage and resurrection for the whole fight.
02
E dash into the carry — close the gap before W so the chain is guaranteed.
03
W the carry immediately — chain pulls them toward your team if they don't Flash escape.
Never use W at maximum range on mobile carries — they'll dash out before being pulled. Close with E first, then W at point-blank range.
2
Q Combo — Sweet Spot Burst
Sustained damage
01
Q1→Q2→Q3 with E repositioning — use E between Q casts to guarantee sweet spot placement.
02
Each sweet spot heals for 3-5% max HP — three sweet spots in one combo is a 15% HP heal.
03
Conqueror fully stacked by Q2 — additional healing from full Conqueror on top of Q recovery.
3
R Resurrection — Second Fight
Survival
01
If killed during R, resurrect immediately — re-engage with whatever HP the resurrection grants.
02
Prioritize Q sweet spots on the most threatening carry during the second life.
03
W any fleeing target after the main carry is dead for secondary pick opportunities.
Q sweet spot mastery separates good Aatrox from great Aatrox. The center of the AoE deals 50% bonus damage and heals. Never fire Q without aiming for the sweet spot.
Tips & Tricks
Advanced Mechanics & Hidden Tech
Advanced mechanics for Aatrox.
Basic
Q Sweet Spot
The center of each Q slam deals 50% bonus damage and heals. Always aim for the sweet spot — missing it makes Aatrox significantly weaker.
Intermediate
E Mid-Q Repositioning
Use E dash between Q cast animations to reposition where the slam lands. E→Q places the sweet spot exactly on a moving target.
Basic
R Timing
Activate R at the start of fights for maximum duration. The resurrection passive is wasted if R is only activated after taking fatal damage.
Advanced
W at Point-Blank
W at maximum range on mobile carries almost always misses. Close with E first, then W at melee range for guaranteed chain.
Intermediate
Conqueror Stacking
Q three-charge combos stack Conqueror fully in one engage. Full Conqueror healing on top of Q sweet spot healing makes extended fights unwinnable for the enemy.
Advanced
Tower Dive with R
R gives you a resurrection during its duration — tower dive freely. Die under tower, revive, and walk out while R is still active.
Basic
Trade Pattern
E→Q1→Q2→Q3 is your full trade sequence. Start with the Q that's easiest to land, save the hardest Q placement for last when they can't react.
Intermediate
Grievous Wounds Counter
Grievous Wounds halves your healing. Build Sterak's for the shield instead of relying purely on Q heal sustain in GW matchups.
Matchups
Counters & Matchups
Aatrox is countered by ranged champions who can harass through his Q animation and Grievous Wounds effects that halve his healing sustain.

Loses Against
True damage bypasses Aatrox's HP stacking. Condemn pushes him away mid-Q animation, canceling the sweet spot.
W Vayne before she Condemns. Q away from walls to avoid Condemn wall-stun.
Gwen's W Mist blocks Aatrox's Q and W from outside the Mist. Her true damage bypasses his healing.
E inside Gwen's Mist — Q and W work inside it. Bait her W out before full combo.
Quinn's range advantage lets her harass through every Q animation. She can kite his entire melee kit.
Wait for Quinn to use Vault (E) then immediately E→Q combo. Her Vault is her only gap closer answer.
Wins Against
Garen's short silence doesn't prevent Q combo. His E spin is outscaled by Q sweet spot healing in extended trades.
Q through Garen's spin. Your sweet spot healing outpaces his spin damage. R makes his execute irrelevant.
Q sweet spot healing outpaces Nasus's damage output. Wither slow doesn't prevent E dash repositioning.
Harass Nasus every time he tries to Q stack. Your healing sustains through Wither. He can't stack into you.
Malphite's passive shield is weak against sustained Q sweet spot damage. His attack speed slow reduces Conqueror stack rate but not Q healing.
Q through Malphite's passive shield repeatedly. Each Q sweet spot heals you while chipping his passive shield.
