CD: 17/15/13/11/9 · Cost: 50/60/70/80/90

CD: 110/100/90 · Cost: 100
Grandmaster's Might passively gives bonus magic damage every third auto. Toggle R on during extended fights to gain bonus armor and magic resistance — especially valuable against mixed-damage enemies.
Skill Leveling Order — Max E (Counter Strike) first for the shortest cooldown on your stun and dodge. Max Q (Leap Strike) second to increase dash damage. Put points in W (Empower) last and take R whenever available.

Gameplay

How to Play Jax

Jax is a patient predator. He loses most early-game trades against strong laners but becomes increasingly oppressive as he itemizes. Your lane goal is to survive, farm, and wait for your power spikes.

01
Early Game
Early Game — Farm and Survive
  • Start Doran's Shield and play passively. Your pre-6 dueling is weaker than many top laners, so avoid extended trades unless you land E stun first.
  • Use Q only for last-hitting from range or escaping ganks — don't waste it aggressively when the enemy jungler could be near.
  • Short trades favor you: E (activate) → Q in → W auto → Q auto → E stun → disengage. This combo is hardest for opponents to answer.
  • Back for Lost Chapter or Sheen component as your first back. Sheen doubles your trade damage and changes the matchup dynamic significantly.
  • Ward river bushes before level 6 — you're gank-prone because Q is your only escape and enemies can punish your dash cooldown.
02
Mid Game
Mid Game — Trinity Spike and Skirmish
  • Complete Trinity Force and start looking for extended fights. Your Spellblade proc + W empowered auto + E stun is an enormous burst combo.
  • Split-push side lanes aggressively. With Trinity Rage passive, you shred towers incredibly fast once you have 2+ items.
  • When collapsing on objectives, use Q to jump to an ally or ward to appear from unexpected angles. Never just walk into a choke point.
  • Activate R toggle before engaging — the bonus armor and magic resistance often means the difference between surviving a burst or dying instantly.
  • You win 1v1 against virtually every champion at 2 items. If ahead, challenge your lane opponent to a duel in side lane and deny them the map.
03
Late Game
Late Game — Unkillable Duelist
  • At 3+ items you are the best 1v1 champion in the game. Duel anyone, anywhere, and win. Identify the enemy carry and run them down.
  • Before teamfights, activate R toggle. Your bonus resistances make you incredibly tanky and your third-auto magic damage shreds squishies.
  • In teamfights, dive the backline rather than engaging tanks. Q onto the ADC, E dodge their autos, W auto → E stun → keep attacking.
  • If you're ahead, split-push with Teleport and force the enemy to send multiple champions — then TP into Baron fights at full HP.
  • Late-game Jax with Counter Strike active is effectively immune to auto-attack-based champions. Force fights on your terms and never stop pressing.

Teamfighting

How to Teamfight as Jax

Jax is a secondary engage/diving threat in teamfights. Your role is to jump onto the enemy backline, dodge their peel attempts with E, and kill their carries while being nearly unkillable.

1
Setup
Position to flank
01
Toggle R on before the fight starts for bonus armor and MR — never forget this step.
02
Activate E Counter Strike immediately when you dive in so you dodge all auto-attacks during your approach.
03
Identify the target — you want the enemy ADC or primary AP carry, not the frontline tank.
⚠ WARNING
Do NOT Q in before E is active. Without the dodge window, you'll eat full damage and die before the stun lands.
2
Engage
Combo the carry
01
Q Leap Strike onto the priority target — they can't dodge it once you commit.
02
W Empower immediately after Q lands for a Sheen-proc empowered auto burst.
03
Let E expire naturally for the AoE stun, keeping enemies CC'd while you chain autos with R passive procs.
3
Cleanup
Mop up and disengage
01
After the carry is dead, use Q to leap to the next nearest threat or ally to reposition safely.
02
If peeled off, activate E again to dodge the next wave of auto-attacks while your team follows up.
03
If Sterak's shield triggers, you're in a great spot — keep fighting. The shield means you survived the burst and now you can win the extended fight.
💡 PRO TIP
Ward the enemy backline with a control ward before teamfights so you can Q from off-screen for a surprise engage angle.

Tips & Tricks

Advanced Mechanics & Hidden Tech

Advanced mechanics for Jax.

Basic
E Then Q — Always
The golden Jax rule: activate Counter Strike (E) before you Q in to the enemy. This gives you the dodge window during your approach so you take zero auto-attack damage while closing the gap.
Basic
W Resets Auto-Attack Timer
Press W immediately after an auto attack to "reset" the animation and fire two autos in quick succession. This effectively doubles your damage burst in short trades and is fundamental to Jax's DPS.
Basic
R Toggle in Fights
Remember to manually toggle Grandmaster's Might (R) during fights for bonus armor and magic resistance. Many Jax players forget this and leave free resistances on the table.
Intermediate
Bait With Short Trades
Level 1–5, initiate short trades: E activate → Q in → W auto → back off → let E timer run and stun them at max range. Never extend a trade without the stun landing — you'll lose to most lane bullies in prolonged exchanges.
Intermediate
Ward-Jump to Safety
Keep a Control Ward or trinket ward in your pocket. You can Q to a placed ward to escape over walls or create unexpected angles. Common escape: ward river bush → Q over the wall before the enemy reaches you.
Intermediate
Time Your Trinity Proc
Spellblade (Sheen/Trinity) applies on your NEXT auto after any ability. Use Q (proc applied) → W auto (reset) for two immediate enhanced autos in a row. This is your maximum burst window and the enemy will lose most of their HP instantly.
Advanced
E Cancel Technique
You can cancel Counter Strike early (press E again) once the enemies are grouped close to you. This gives you a faster stun but less dodge time. Use early cancel when you're confident enemies are in range and you don't need the full dodge window.
Advanced
Split-Push Prioritization
Full-build Jax can 1v2 most champion combinations. Use this to your advantage: split-push the opposite side wave, force 2 enemies to respond, then Teleport into the 4v3 teamfight at full HP. You're simultaneously creating pressure on two maps locations.

Matchups

Counters & Matchups

Jax struggles against ranged poke, true damage, and champions who can simply stay outside his melee range and whittle him down before he scales.

Click any matchup to expand tips & how to play against them
Loses Against
Teemo
Teemo Hard
Blind Shot negates your entire kit. While Counter Strike is active, Teemo's blind still prevents you from dealing auto-attack damage — the core of your trading pattern. He also pokes you to death from range before you can scale.
Rush Ninja Tabi (Plated Steelcaps) and try to all-in under his mushrooms when you hit level 6. Take Ignite to chunk through his sustain and force trades he can't sustain.
Quinn
Quinn Hard
Quinn has permanent range advantage, her E Vault knocks you back interrupting Q mid-dash, and she can kite you indefinitely. You can't force a trade and she outscales your early game with consistent poke.
Play extremely safe and farm. Buy Steelcaps early, ask for jungle pressure, and accept that this lane is a farm lane. Spike at two items and look for opportunities when Quinn overextends.
Vayne
Vayne Hard
Silver Bolts deal true damage scaling with your max HP — the more tanky you build, the more she hurts. She also kites you with E Condemn and Q tumble, making it almost impossible to stick to her without gap-close cooldowns.
Build Trinity Force into Sterak's Gage and try to all-in her before she gets two items. Your window is very short. Ward carefully so she doesn't get a wall to Condemn you into.
Wins Against
Malphite
Malphite Easy
Malphite relies almost entirely on auto-attacks for trading damage in lane. Counter Strike dodges every single one, making his trade pattern completely irrelevant against you.
Activate E as soon as Malphite walks up to trade. You dodge all his autos, land the stun, and freely attack him back. Post-6 he might R engage but you dodge his follow-up autos anyway.
Darius
Darius Easy
Darius wants extended trades to stack Hemorrhage bleeds. Counter Strike denies his autos during the most critical bleed-stacking window, and E stun prevents him from landing his full combo.
Counter Strike timing is everything: activate E when Darius commits to his Q spin. You dodge the outer healing portion and land a stun right as he finishes, then punish him freely.
Nasus
Nasus Easy
Nasus has no gap-close and his W Wither slows you but doesn't stop your Q dash. You can harass him freely, deny his Siphoning Strike stacks, and dive him easily once you have Trinity Force.
Constantly poke with E stun and Q dashes to prevent Nasus from safely farming his Q stacks. Don't let him reach 200+ stacks or the matchup gets harder late game.
