Irelia's gameplan revolves around passive stack management and Q reset chains. Every game decision should maximize the time you spend at 5 stacks: pre-stack in minions, enter fights with stacks, and chain Q resets to maintain them through teamfights.
Abilities
Skills Overview
P
Ionian Fervor
Passive
When Irelia strikes enemies with spells she gains stacking bonus Attack Speed. At maximum stacks she also gains bonus damage on hit.
Q
Bladesurge
Targeted Dash / Reset
Irelia dashes forward to strike her target, healing herself. If the target is Marked or dies to Bladesurge, its cooldown refreshes.
CD: 10/9/8/7/6 · Cost: 15
Bladesurge resets when it kills the target — chain Q resets through low-HP minions to build passive stacks before engaging the enemy champion. Always enter a fight with at least 3 stacks pre-loaded.
W
Defiant Dance
Heal / Damage Reduction
Irelia charges a strike that deals more damage as she charges. She takes reduced physical damage during the charge.
CD: 20/18/16/14/12 · Cost: 70/75/80/85/90
Defiant Dance absorbs a percentage of physical and magic damage during the wind-up, then deals bonus damage on the release. Hold W for the full channel to maximize both the shield value and the damage payoff.
E
Flawless Duet
Two-Blade Snare
Irelia sends out two blades which converge on each other. Enemies caught in between are damaged, stunned and Marked.
CD: 16/14.5/13/11.5/10 · Cost: 50
Flawless Duet sends one blade and roots the target on the second blade's collision — use it to set up your Q dash path directly into the root for a guaranteed combo.
R
Vanguard's Edge
Line Skill Shot / Return
Irelia fires a massive number of blades that explode outward upon hitting an enemy champion. Enemies hit by the blades are damaged and Marked. Afterwards the blades form a wall that will damage and slow enemies that walk through it.
CD: 125/105/85 · Cost: 100
Vanguard's Edge throws blades in a line that expand and return. Use it to create a wall of blades in front of fleeing enemies or to peel away assassins. Enemies crossing the blades are damaged and slowed.
Skill Leveling Order — Max Q for reset damage and cooldown reduction, then E for snare setup and cooldown, last W.

Recommended Builds
Starter
Doran's Blade
AD, HP, and on-hit healing sustain aggressive early trades with Q resets.
450g
Core
Trinity Force
Spellblade procs on every Q reset — each dash applies a bonus empowered auto that scales with your base AD. Combined with rapid Q resets, Trinity Force is Irelia's most impactful item.
3333g
Sterak's Gage
Lifeline shield triggers when burst would otherwise kill you mid-reset chain, giving you survivability without slowing down the Q chain.
3100g
Death's Dance
Converts a portion of incoming damage into a bleed-style delayed damage, letting Irelia survive burst spikes and heal through the damage during extended Q reset chains.
3300g
Situational
Wit's End
On-hit MR shred and bonus magic damage vs tanky AP compositions — on-hit procs on every rapid Q reset.
3100g
Guardian Angel
Second life when diving into the enemy backline — revive inside your R blade wall for maximum defensive value.
2800g
Maw of Malmortius
Burst AP shield vs assassins or heavy AP compositions — synergizes with Death's Dance to negate two separate burst windows.
2800g
Trinity Force is mandatory every game — never deviate. Sterak's and Death's Dance form the survivability backbone. Adjust the fourth item based on enemy composition.
Runes
Precision Primary
Conqueror
Each Q reset stacks Conqueror independently — Irelia can reach full stacks in 3–4 Q resets, converting damage to true damage and healing. Combined with 5-stack passive, fully-stacked Irelia is essentially unkillable in extended trades.
Triumph
HP restoration on takedown keeps Irelia alive through chain kills — critical for surviving 1v2 scenarios after an R initiation.
Legend: Alacrity
Free attack speed stacks further amplify Ionian Fervor passive attack speed, pushing Irelia's auto-attack output to extreme levels at 5 passive marks.
Last Stand
Irelia frequently fights at low HP after surviving burst with Death's Dance and Sterak's — Last Stand amplifies damage exactly when the 5-stack passive is most critical.
Resolve Secondary
Bone Plating
Reduces the first 3 hits of consecutive burst combos — critical for surviving Renekton's 3-hit W stun burst and other short-trade all-ins before passive is stacked.
Conditioning
Passive armor and MR after 12 minutes compound with Death's Dance damage conversion — turning Irelia into a durable frontliner by mid-game.

How to Play Irelia
01
Early Game
Early Game — Stack Management
- Levels 1–3: Farm safely and focus on pre-stacking Ionian Fervor passive through low-HP minions before the enemy can react. Never engage at 0 stacks.
- E Flawless Duet is your primary setup — throw one blade, walk to the second position, and Q dash into the root for a guaranteed all-in combo at level 3.
- Do not trade vs Renekton before you have 3+ passive stacks and Bone Plating charges available — his burst damage at levels 2–4 is difficult to survive.
- Use W Defiant Dance aggressively when the jungler ganks: activate it as the jungler's CC lands to absorb the burst, then Q reset through minions to escape.
- Play around the Vital-equivalent logic: only commit to extended trades when your passive is at 4–5 stacks and your Conqueror is fully built.
02
Mid Game
Mid Game — Reset Chain Fights
- With Trinity Force online, your Q reset chains become the primary carry tool — chain through low-HP minions to reach full Conqueror stacks before engaging the enemy.
- E into R combo: throw E blades to root the enemy, then cast R Vanguard's Edge to wall off their escape path, locking them in for a full Q chain.
- Split push aggressively with Trinity Force Spellblade — each Q dash into a minion procs a bonus auto, enabling incredibly fast wave clear.
- At 5 passive stacks, you have enough attack speed to out-trade any top laner in the game — bait extended fights when stacked and shred tanks.
- Rotating to teamfights: pre-stack passive on the enemy wave, then TP into the fight already at 5 marks for maximum immediate impact.
03
Late Game
Late Game — Split and Teamfight
- In teamfights, R Vanguard's Edge into the enemy team creates a blade wall that slows everyone — walk through the collapsed blades for full passive stacking from the line contact.
- Target squishy carries first: E snare to lock them down, Q dash in, spam autos at 5-stack speed, then Q reset through dying minions or champions to chase the next target.
- If the enemy is kiting and slowing you, W Defiant Dance through the crowd-control, absorbing the burst before releasing the channel for bonus damage.
- In 1v1 split push scenarios, beat any opponent at 5 passive stacks — even Malphite must respect the attack speed at full stacks combined with Trinity Force procs.
- With Guardian Angel, dive the entire backline through R blade wall, chain Q resets through dying champions, and revive inside the blade return for a full second HP bar.
Teamfighting
How to Teamfight as Irelia
Irelia's teamfight is built around entering at maximum passive stacks, chaining Q resets through dying targets, and using R to create a disruptive blade wall that forces unfavorable positioning on the enemy team.
1
Setup — Pre-Stack and Position
Before the teamfight begins
01
Pre-stack Ionian Fervor on the enemy minion wave before the fight breaks out — enter every teamfight at 4–5 stacks for immediate maximum attack speed.
02
Line up R Vanguard's Edge to hit the maximum number of enemy champions — the blade wall creates a slow field that prevents repositioning and sets up E snare combos.
03
Identify your first Q target — a low-HP minion or the enemy frontline champion gives you a safe Q dash entry that doesn't over-extend into the enemy backline immediately.
NEVER engage at 0 passive stacks in a teamfight. Without Ionian Fervor, Irelia's damage is dramatically lower and her Q cooldown is too long to chain effectively.
2
Mid-Fight — Q Reset Chain
You're inside the enemy team at 5 stacks
01
Chain Q resets through any low-HP unit — minions, jungle pets, or enemy champions — to maintain momentum and reset Trinity Force Spellblade procs.
02
Use E Flawless Duet on the priority carry while Q chaining to root them in place; the snare gives your team free damage while you stay on the target.
03
Activate W Defiant Dance if you are about to take a burst combo — hold the channel to absorb the maximum damage, then release for the follow-up damage after the burst.
3
Clean Up — Chain Kills and R Peel
Enemy team is collapsing
01
Q reset through dying enemy champions to chase fleeing targets — each champion kill is a free Q reset that costs no mana and maintains passive stacks.
02
Drop R Vanguard's Edge in the path of fleeing enemies to slow them through the returning blade wave, enabling your team to clean up stragglers.
03
If turned on by the enemy backline, W Defiant Dance through their CC, then Q reset onto any nearby unit to escape before they can finish the burst rotation.
Triumph restores 12% missing HP on takedown — chain three kills in a teamfight and you effectively heal a large portion of your HP bar just from the Triumph procs alone.
Tips & Tricks
Advanced Mechanics & Hidden Tech
Advanced mechanics for Irelia.
Basic
Pre-Stack Before Every Fight
Before engaging the enemy champion, Q reset through 3–4 low-HP minions in the wave. This builds your Ionian Fervor passive to 4–5 marks before the enemy can react, giving you immediate maximum attack speed on the first auto.
Basic
E Then Q for Guaranteed Combo
Throw the first E blade at the enemy, walk to the second E blade position, then Q dash onto the rooted target. The E root guarantees that your Q reaches them — the core Irelia combo that every player must master.
Basic
Q Only Resets on Kill
Bladesurge only resets its cooldown when Irelia kills the target. Do not waste Q on healthy enemy champions expecting a reset — target low-HP minions and use Q on champions as the finisher.
Intermediate
Conqueror Stacks With Q Resets
Each Q cast — including resets — adds a Conqueror stack independently. Chain Q through 4 minions into an enemy champion and you enter the fight with Conqueror already halfway or fully stacked, converting your damage to true damage immediately.
Intermediate
W Hold for Maximum Value
Defiant Dance absorbs more damage and deals more release damage the longer you hold the channel. In practice: absorb the enemy's full burst rotation during the channel, then release the stored damage for a significant hit.
Intermediate
R Blade Wall Positioning
R blades expand outward and return — position R so the return path crosses the fleeing enemy, not just the initial throw. Enemies crossing the blades during the return are slowed and damaged, giving you catch potential on escaping targets.
Advanced
5-Stack Timing Windows
Ionian Fervor stacks decay if you do not hit a champion within a short window. In a long teamfight, briefly Q a nearby minion to refresh the decay timer and maintain 5 stacks throughout the entire fight — this is the difference between expert Irelia play and average play.
Advanced
Trinity Force Q Proc Optimization
Spellblade from Trinity Force procs on the auto-attack after each Q cast. In a reset chain, auto-attack between each Q to proc Spellblade on every single reset — this triples your effective damage output compared to Q-spamming without autos in between.
Matchups
Counters & Matchups
Irelia loses to champions who can punish her before she reaches 5 passive stacks, apply %HP true damage that ignores her tankiness, or silence her before she can begin the Q chain.

Loses Against
Malphite's E Ground Slam reduces Irelia's attack speed, directly countering her Ionian Fervor passive stacking. His armor passive absorbs Q damage and his tankiness makes reset chains ineffective.
Build Wit's End for MR shred and on-hit damage vs Malphite's armor. Play for split-push side lanes rather than direct 1v1s — Malphite cannot duel Irelia in a side lane at 5-stack passive if you avoid his R.
Renekton's W Cull the Meek empowered stun activates faster than Irelia can react, bursting her before she has passive stacks built up. His level 1–4 dominance denies Irelia the safe farming she needs to stack passively.
Take Bone Plating to absorb Renekton's 3-hit W burst. Never fight at 0–2 passive stacks. Farm safely under tower until level 6, then look for R + E + Q all-in combos when Renekton overcommits.
Garen's Q Decisive Strike silences Irelia, preventing her from casting Q to reset or E to set up combos during the silence window. The silence effectively disarms Irelia's entire kit for 1.5 seconds.
Begin your E setup before Garen can reach Q range — pre-throw the first E blade and wait for the second blade collision as Garen closes the gap. This way the root lands simultaneously with his Q, negating the silence advantage.
Wins Against
Nasus has no mobility, no CC that stops Irelia's Q chain, and no burst to interrupt passive stacking. Irelia freely dashes in and out to deny Q farm while maintaining 5 passive stacks.
Deny Nasus Q stacks by Q dashing in whenever he steps up to last-hit. Your 5-stack attack speed lets you shred him in extended trades — he has no answer to Irelia's trade pattern.
With 5-stack Ionian Fervor, Irelia's attack speed exceeds Garen's ability to trade back. By managing the E pre-setup to counter his Q silence, Irelia wins extended fights cleanly.
Pre-throw E before Garen reaches melee range so the root lands as he arrives, neutralizing his Q silence window. At 5 passive stacks, trade freely — your attack speed dramatically exceeds his DPS.
With 5-stack Ionian Fervor and Conqueror fully stacked, Irelia's sustained damage and Q reset mobility exceeds Darius's bleed DPS. Her Q resets let her disengage before he stacks 5 Hemorrhage.
Never fight Darius at 0–2 passive stacks — he wins short trades. Pre-stack to 4–5 stacks on the wave, then dash in for extended fights where your attack speed at max stacks overwhelms his bleed pattern.
