Mordekaiser is an AP juggernaut who excels at 1v1 isolation. He drains enemy stats to buff himself, heals through his W shield, and pulls a single target into the Death Realm for 7 seconds of pure 1v1 combat with no items, no buffs, and no escape. He dominates any champion who can't kill him before his sustain takes over.

Mordekaiser gains a powerful damage aura and Move Speed after landing 3 attacks or spells against champions or monsters.
Q
Obliterate
Obliterate
AoE Strike + Stat Drain
Mordekaiser smashes the ground with his mace dealing damage to each enemy struck. Damage is increased when hitting a single enemy.
CD: 8/7/6/5/4 · Cost: 0
Obliterate deals more damage when hitting a single target. Try to isolate enemies from minions before Q for maximum burst. Q also drains a portion of enemy resistances — use it repeatedly in the Death Realm to strip the enemy's armor and MR.
W
Indestructible
Indestructible
Shield + Healing
Mordekaiser stores damage he deals and takes to create a shield. He may consume the shield to heal.
CD: 12/11/10/9/8 · Cost: 0
Indestructible creates a shield that stores a portion of damage you deal. Deal damage first to build the shield, then activate W to absorb incoming burst. Holding it too long wastes the stored value — use it proactively when enemies commit to trading.
E
Death's Grasp
Death's Grasp
Pull + Slow
Mordekaiser pulls all enemies in an area.
CD: 18/16/14/12/10 · Cost: 0
Death's Grasp pulls enemies toward you and slows them. Excellent for catching kiting champions who try to escape Death Realm, or for preventing an enemy from reaching safety before your R expires. Aim it slightly ahead of moving targets.
R
Realm of Death
Realm of Death
Death Realm Isolation
Mordekaiser drags his victim to a different dimension with him and steals a portion of their stats. If he kills them, he keeps the stats until the victim respawns.
CD: 140/120/100 · Cost: 0
Realm of Death temporarily removes all items and external buffs from the target. Use this against fed carries whose strength comes from items — stripping a 4-item ADC of their entire inventory is a guaranteed kill. Inside the realm, stack Q hits to drain their stats and build your own.
Skill Leveling Order — Max Q (Obliterate) first for the highest damage and stat-drain efficiency. Max W (Indestructible) second to increase shield capacity and healing, making you increasingly unkillable. Take E (Death's Grasp) last since its pull range doesn't increase meaningfully with rank. Take R at 6, 11, and 16.

Starter
Doran's Shield
Doran's Shield
Best starting item for most matchups. Passive regeneration synergizes with Mordekaiser's sustain-heavy kit and makes him harder to chip down with poke during the laning phase.

Core
Riftmaker
Riftmaker
Mordekaiser's best mythic item. Omnivamp heals from all damage types and stacks of Void Infusion amplify sustained damage — perfect for his extended fight style. The true damage conversion rewards him for staying in fights for multiple Q rotations.
3200g
Rylai's Crystal Scepter
Rylai's Crystal Scepter
Every Q hit applies a slow, making it nearly impossible for enemies to escape after being pulled into Death Realm. Rylai's solves Mordekaiser's only real problem — being kited — by turning every ability into a persistent slow.
2600g
Shadowflame
Shadowflame
Massive AP and magic penetration that scales with killing enemies who have shields. Mordekaiser frequently faces shields; Shadowflame punishes them and provides raw damage to delete squishies inside Death Realm.
3000g

Zhonya's Hourglass
Zhonya's Hourglass
Stasis invulnerability lets you survive burst combos, wait out R in safety if you're losing the 1v1, or bait out enemy ultimates. Essential against Zed, Fizz, or any fed assassin.
3250g
Demonic Embrace
Demonic Embrace
Percent HP burn damage stacks on all your spells — excellent against tank-heavy enemies who have large HP pools. Synergizes perfectly with Riftmaker's sustained damage amplification.
3000g
Void Staff
Void Staff
40% magic penetration against high MR targets. When enemies build Force of Nature or stack Spectre's Cowl components to counter your AP damage, Void Staff restores your kill pressure entirely.
2800g
Riftmaker + Rylai's is the core two-item power spike. After these two items, Mordekaiser's Death Realm becomes a nearly guaranteed kill on most champions who can't hard-counter him.

Sorcery Primary
Phase Rush
Phase Rush
Hitting an enemy with 3 attacks/abilities grants a massive move speed burst. Mordekaiser triggers this in 1 Q + 1 auto, giving him the burst of speed needed to stick to kiting enemies and stay in range to land E Death's Grasp.
Nimbus Cloak
Nimbus Cloak
Move speed after using summoner spells — Ghost or Teleport trigger this, giving Mordekaiser extra sticking power precisely when he needs it most (on the enemy carry).
Gathering Storm
Gathering Storm
Free AP that grows exponentially over a full game. Mordekaiser's R Death Realm deals AP-scaling damage, making Gathering Storm stack directly into his Death Realm kill pressure in the late game.
Conditioning
Conditioning
After 12 minutes, gain bonus armor and MR that grows throughout the game. Mordekaiser's tankiness in the Death Realm scales with his resistances — Conditioning makes him a progressively harder 1v1 opponent.

Gameplay

How to Play Mordekaiser

Mordekaiser is a slow-building AP juggernaut who rewards patience. He needs items to hit his peak, but once Riftmaker and Rylai's are online, he becomes an unstoppable force that can beat virtually any champion 1v1 inside Death Realm.

01
Early Game
Early Game — Farm and Apply Passive
  • Apply your Darkness Rise passive (3 hits) in every trade for the persistent AoE magic damage. Q → auto → Q → auto → Q efficiently stacks and maintains the passive while dealing solid damage.
  • Build W shield proactively: deal damage to the enemy first, then activate W when they try to burst you back. Never pop W the moment the fight starts — let the stored damage charge it first.
  • Phase Rush activates from Q + 2 autos. In short trades, trigger it immediately to chase down enemies or safely escape after trading without taking return damage.
  • Farm is paramount — your first two items are mandatory before R becomes a reliable kill tool. Back only when you have enough gold for significant components and don't fall behind on CS.
  • Avoid extended fights against champions with Grievous Wounds. Your healing is your only real defense early, and GW halves it. Back off when you see Ignite applied and wait for it to expire.
02
Mid Game
Mid Game — R on Cooldown, Win Trades
  • At level 6 with even farm, R your lane opponent and win the 1v1 decisively. Inside Death Realm, spam Q to drain their resistances — each Q hit reduces their armor/MR and adds it to yours.
  • Use E Death's Grasp to pull fleeing enemies before they exit R range. The slow combined with Phase Rush move speed means almost no champion can outrun you inside Death Realm.
  • After completing Riftmaker, look to roam mid or R the enemy top laner every time R comes off cooldown (90 second base cooldown). Every R kill or burn snowballs your gold lead.
  • If shoved in under tower, use E to pull enemies off the tower aggro range and Q under tower for last hits. You're surprisingly safe under tower since your W shield can absorb turret shots.
  • Split-push top and bot alternately — your 1v1 potential means most champions will hesitate to engage you alone, and your passive AoE damages entire minion waves for fast push.
03
Late Game
Late Game — Isolate and Eliminate Carries
  • Target the enemy ADC or fed AP carry with R in every teamfight. Pulling the primary damage source out of the fight for 7 seconds almost always results in a won teamfight, even if you lose the 1v1.
  • Inside Death Realm, prioritize Q spam over autos — Q has higher AP ratios, drains resistances faster, and applies Rylai's slow on every hit to prevent kiting.
  • Use E Death's Grasp immediately when R expires to catch enemies who think they're free. Many players relax when they exit Death Realm thinking they're safe — E catches them while you're still at full Riftmaker stacks.
  • If your team has strong AoE engage, consider not R-ing every fight — sometimes staying in the main fight to peel with E and W shield is more valuable than isolating one target.
  • Against a split-push team composition, R the enemy split-pusher in a side lane to remove them from the map for 7 seconds. Your team can take objectives freely while you handle the 1v1.

Teamfighting

How to Teamfight as Mordekaiser

Mordekaiser's teamfight role is unique: he removes the enemy's most important target from the fight entirely. Used correctly, R makes the enemy fight a 4v5 while you win a guaranteed 1v1 elsewhere.

1
Target Selection
Identify and isolate the priority
01
Identify the primary target before the fight — it's usually the ADC, fed midlaner, or whoever snowballed. Stripping their items is maximum value.
02
Watch their positioning during the pre-fight phase. Wait for them to overextend slightly before committing to R range — chasing into their team is dangerous.
03
Apply Passive stacks with Q + autos before using R to enter with Darkness Rise already active inside Death Realm.
⚠ WARNING
Never R a tank. Removing a frontline from the fight while your team gets burst by their carries is the worst possible R usage. Always R a damage dealer.
2
Death Realm
Win the 1v1
01
Immediately Q as you both materialize inside Death Realm — land it within the first second to start draining their resistances before they adapt.
02
Use E Death's Grasp the moment they try to run to keep them in range and maintain the Phase Rush slow throughout the duration.
03
Activate W Indestructible when you drop below 60% HP — you've been dealing damage since the start, so W should be nearly fully charged for a massive shield.
3
Return
Cleanup and secondary targets
01
If you kill your target, their ghost fights for you when you return — position the ghost toward remaining enemies before Death Realm expires.
02
E any fleeing enemy immediately upon returning — they expect you to be occupied in Death Realm and may be caught off-guard.
03
Check your team's HP when you return — if they're losing, use W to block the next burst of incoming damage and E the enemy carry to keep them slowed.
💡 PRO TIP
If you drain enough stats in Death Realm, you return with your target's armor and MR added to your own — making you nearly unkillable for several seconds after the fight ends.

Tips & Tricks

Advanced Mechanics & Hidden Tech

Advanced mechanics for Mordekaiser.

Basic
W Charging — Deal First, Shield Second
Indestructible stores damage you deal before you activate it. Always deal damage first — Q, auto, Q — then pop W when the enemy retaliates. Activating W at the start of a trade wastes most of its potential stored value.
Basic
Phase Rush Activation
Phase Rush triggers after hitting an enemy with 3 separate attacks or abilities. Your fastest combo is Q → auto → Q, which activates the keystone almost instantly and gives you the sticking power to follow up with E or stay in melee range.
Basic
R Removes Items
Inside Death Realm, neither champion has access to their items or external buffs. This means you should always R the enemy's strongest item-dependent champion — a 4-item ADC becomes a naked level 16 champion inside the realm.
Intermediate
Q Single-Target Bonus
Obliterate deals 15% bonus damage when it hits only one target. Position yourself so minions are not between you and the enemy before casting Q. This also applies inside Death Realm — always Q when it's a pure 1v1 with no peripheral targets.
Intermediate
E Range and Angle
Death's Grasp is a skillshot that pulls enemies toward you. Lead moving targets — aim slightly ahead of where they're running. In Death Realm, enemies instinctively run away so aim toward the edge of the realm boundary to catch them at maximum range.
Intermediate
Ghost Over Teleport
Ghost is Mordekaiser's best summoner spell in many matchups. It activates Nimbus Cloak for bonus speed, stacks with Phase Rush for near-unstoppable chase potential, and helps you close the gap on kiting enemies before casting R. Take Teleport only when split-push pressure is specifically needed.
Advanced
Stat-Drain Stacking Inside Realm
Each Q hit inside Death Realm drains a percentage of the target's armor and magic resistance. Hit Q as many times as possible — by the end of a 7-second realm with max Q casts, you can strip 15–25% of their total resistances. This turns you into an increasingly unkillable juggernaut as the fight progresses.
Advanced
Enemy Ghost Positioning
If you kill your target inside Death Realm, their ghost fights alongside you when the realm ends. Before Death Realm expires, move toward the enemy team's location — when the ghost appears, it starts near your position and immediately walks toward the nearest enemy, maximizing its combat usefulness.

Matchups

Counters & Matchups

Mordekaiser's weakness is champions who can negate his R, escape Death Realm's isolation, counter his AP damage with magic resistance, or prevent his healing from sustaining him through trades.

Click any matchup to expand tips & how to play against them
Loses Against
Fiora
Fiora Hard
Fiora's W Parry reflects Mordekaiser's abilities back at him, including Q Obliterate. Getting parried while trying to drain stats inside Death Realm is devastating — Fiora can parry, stun Morde, and fully combo while he's helpless. Her Vitals also deal true damage that his W shield can't fully block.
Try to bait out Fiora's W Parry with an auto attack before committing Q. Inside Death Realm, space carefully and watch for her W startup animation before casting your abilities.
Vayne
Vayne Hard
Vayne's E Condemn can pin Mordekaiser to the Death Realm's edge wall, dealing a massive stun and bonus damage. Her Silver Bolts true damage also ignores Mordekaiser's W shield and magic resistance stacking. She kites Phase Rush with Q Tumble and is one of the few champions who can consistently win inside Death Realm.
Stay away from the Death Realm's boundary walls — Vayne will intentionally Condemn you into them. Build early MR components and look to trade at level 3 before she gets her full kit online.
Gangplank
Gangplank Hard
Gangplank's W Remove Scurvy cleanses Mordekaiser's Passive mark, delaying or preventing the Darkness Rise damage procs. More critically, W also cleanses the Death Realm R itself — Gangplank can simply press W to escape the realm entirely, wasting Mordekaiser's most powerful ability.
Bait out Gangplank's W by throwing an E or using a basic auto first. Wait 10–12 seconds for the W cooldown before committing R. Without W available, Death Realm is a guaranteed kill.
Wins Against
Malphite
Malphite Easy
Malphite stacks armor which Mordekaiser's AP damage ignores via magic penetration. Inside Death Realm, Mordekaiser drains Malphite's armor (reducing his W bonus damage) while Malphite has no answer for sustained magic damage. Mordekaiser wins the 1v1 handily.
R Malphite freely whenever it's available. Inside Death Realm, spam Q to drain his armor stacks quickly — this also reduces his W Thunderclap damage, making him deal significantly less during the fight.
Nasus
Nasus Easy
Nasus is a slow, farm-dependent champion who struggles against Mordekaiser's persistent AoE Passive damage and W shield sustain. R Nasus inside Death Realm removes his Fury and Wither stacks briefly, and Mordekaiser's AP damage bypasses Nasus's physical resistance stacking.
Poke with Q constantly to deny Nasus's Siphoning Strike farming. R him whenever he overextends — without his team, Nasus cannot output enough burst to beat Mordekaiser's healing and shield.
Garen
Garen Easy
Garen builds magic resistance last and has no mobility to escape Death Realm. His Silence prevents Mordekaiser from casting for 1.5 seconds but Morde's passive still damages him during that window. Garen's sustain (passive regen) is completely outpaced by Mordekaiser's Riftmaker Omnivamp healing.
Trade aggressively at levels 2–3 before Garen completes his first armor item. Inside Death Realm, Q spam drains his armor and magic resistance — by the end of the realm, Garen is usually at 30–40% HP with nothing to show for it.
