Pit Grit
Passive
Sett's basic attacks alternate between left and right punch. Right punch is slightly stronger and faster. Sett also hates losing, gaining additional health regeneration based off of his missing health.
Q
Knuckle Down
Knuckle Down
Move Speed + Damage
Sett's next two attacks deal additional damage based off of the target's max health. Sett also gains Move Speed while moving towards enemy champions.
CD: 9/8/7/6/5 · Cost: 0
Knuckle Down grants movement speed toward enemies on activation — use it to close gaps after your E slow or when chasing. Each hit generates Grit, so weave autos between abilities.
W
Haymaker
Haymaker
True Damage Nuke
Sett passively stores damage he takes as Grit. On cast, Sett expends all stored Grit to gain a shield and punch an area, dealing true damage in the center and physical damage on the sides.
CD: 18/16.5/15/13.5/12 · Cost: 0
Haymaker consumes your Grit bar and fires a cone of damage, with the center dealing true damage. Always aim to hit enemies with the center of W for maximum burst. Do not use W below half Grit — save it for a full or near-full bar for true damage.
E
Facebreaker
Facebreaker
AoE Slow
Sett pulls in all enemies on opposite sides of him, dealing damage and stunning them. If enemies were only on one side, they are slowed instead of stunned.
CD: 16/14.5/13/11.5/10 · Cost: 0
Facebreaker pulls enemies on both sides toward Sett and stuns briefly if both sides are hit. Use E to set up W casts in lane or to cluster enemies in teamfights before your R.
R
The Show Stopper
The Show Stopper
Suppression Grab
Sett carries an enemy champion through the air and slams them into the ground, dealing damage and slowing all enemies near where they land.
CD: 120/100/80 · Cost: 0
The Show Stopper grabs one enemy and piledrives them into the ground, dealing damage based on the target's max HP to all enemies they land on. Grab the heaviest enemy (most HP/armor) to maximize splash damage. Can be used to throw a tanky enemy into their own backline.
Skill Leveling Order — Max Q first for consistent lane damage and movement speed, then W for maximum true damage output, level E last as the slow and stun duration do not scale much — take R at 6/11/16.

Gameplay

How to Play Sett

Sett wants to absorb damage, fill his Grit bar, and release it as a devastating true-damage W into clustered enemies. He excels in short-to-medium trades in lane and becomes a teamfight carry who wins by throwing tanks into their own backline.

01
Early Game
Levels 1–6: Grit Brawler
  • Level 1: Start Q and look for auto-attack trades to build Grit. The more damage you take, the bigger your W will be — do not back away from short trades.
  • Level 3: Unlock E for a mini-stun in trades. The pattern is Q in, auto, E to stun, W to dump Grit, then back off or commit if they are low.
  • Let the enemy push the wave into you early — absorbing minion damage also builds Grit, and you want to trade near your turret for safety.
  • At 50%+ Grit, look for W trades. Aim to hit with the center of W (true damage) by walking up close before casting — the cone tip only deals physical damage.
  • At level 6, R is your kill-confirm tool. Use it to grab a low-HP enemy and piledrive them into the ground, or use it to set up W on grouped enemies.
02
Mid Game
Levels 7–13: Objective Control
  • After first back, focus on wave management and look for chances to roam when your R is available — a well-placed R into an enemy jungler or mid is a free kill.
  • Splitpush is strong for Sett: your 1v1 is exceptional with a full Grit bar ready, and most single opponents cannot match your sustained damage.
  • When your team groups for Dragon or Herald, use R to grab the enemy frontliner and throw them into your team — this immediately creates a numbers disadvantage for the enemy.
  • Build Grit during objective setup by standing in the danger zone absorbing poke — arrive at the fight with a full Grit bar ready to release.
  • Track enemy Flash cooldowns before attempting R: a missed grab is often punishable, and you want the suppression to land reliably on priority targets.
03
Late Game
Levels 14–18: Teamfight Carry
  • In teamfights, your primary goal is to R the heaviest enemy (highest HP tank or carry) and throw them into their own team to split their formation.
  • After R, immediately Q into the chaotic mess it creates — your E can cluster any displaced enemies together for a devastating W true damage nuke.
  • Pop Conqueror stacks through sustained Q auto-attack trading before unleashing W to convert the stacks into healing that keeps you alive longer.
  • If the enemy team is grouping for Baron or Elder, use R to pick off their frontliner and start the fight at a numbers advantage.
  • As an ultra-durable front-liner late, do not be afraid to die heroically — if your R throw sets up a fight-winning position for your team, the trade is worth it.

Teamfighting

How to Teamfight as Sett

Sett's teamfight revolves entirely around landing R on the right target and positioning W to hit the center true-damage zone on as many enemies as possible. He can single-handedly win fights by creating chaos that his team exploits.

1
Engage
Fill Grit then commit with R
01
Build Grit before the fight by absorbing poke or standing near the frontline — enter the fight with at least 50% Grit ready to release.
02
Use R on the highest-HP enemy — tanks with more HP deal more splash damage when thrown, maximizing AoE damage on the enemy team.
03
Q into the clustered enemies immediately after R to start stacking Conqueror and generating Grit for a follow-up W in the same fight.
⚠ WARNING
Do not R a squishy carry if their tank is nearby — the splash damage from the tank throw deals far more total damage than grabbing the carry.
2
Execution
Aim W center for true damage
01
Walk directly onto grouped enemies before casting W — the center true-damage zone is narrow and you need to be inside the cluster to hit it.
02
Use E to pull enemies inward if they try to scatter after your R — a brief stun into W is often an instant kill on a medium-HP target.
03
Do not dump W at low Grit — if Grit is below 50%, keep auto-attacking and wait; the true damage threshold makes a full bar W several times more valuable.
3
Cleanup
Chase with Q and peel with E
01
Q into fleeing enemies — the movement speed burst from Knuckle Down lets you chase down anyone who tries to escape after your R W combo.
02
E to protect your carry if the enemy team flanks — pulling assassins away from your backline with Facebreaker stun is a high-value play in the cleanup phase.
03
Save R if it resets — if the fight drags on, a second R throw can completely reset a fight that appeared to be turning against your team.
💡 PRO TIP
If you R a tanky enemy into their own AP carry, the splash damage scales off the tank's max HP — you can one-shot their carry with the throw alone if the tank has 4000+ HP.

Tips & Tricks

Advanced Mechanics & Hidden Tech

Advanced mechanics for Sett.

Basic
Take damage to fill Grit faster
Grit is generated when Sett takes damage. Do not back away from short trades — absorbing the enemy's poke and then dumping W is your primary damage pattern in lane.
Basic
Aim for the center of W
Haymaker has two zones: a physical damage outer cone and a true damage center. Always walk onto your target before casting W so the true damage portion connects — this is the difference between tickling and deleting.
Basic
R the heaviest enemy in teamfights
The Show Stopper deals damage based on the grabbed enemy's max HP to everyone they land on. Always grab the tankiest enemy to maximize splash damage, even if the carry is a tempting target.
Intermediate
Save W above 50% Grit
Haymaker only deals true damage in the center when your Grit bar is above 50%. Never burn W at low Grit — the physical-only version is much weaker and wastes your kit's core threat.
Intermediate
Use E to set up W
Facebreaker pulls enemies on both sides of Sett toward him. Use E to cluster enemies, then immediately cast W into the now-grouped targets. A well-placed E-W combo can hit 3 or more enemies with true damage.
Intermediate
Stack Grit before objectives
Stand in Baron or Dragon poke while your team zones out enemies before the fight. Arriving at a teamfight with a full Grit bar gives you an immediate W threat that forces defensive play from the enemy.
Advanced
Throw tanks into the backline with R
You can use R to grab an enemy frontliner and throw them over or past your own team, landing them next to the enemy carries. This isolates their carries from their peel while your team cleans up the frontliner you threw.
Advanced
Track Grit decay timing
Grit decays when Sett stops taking damage for a period. If you are building Grit in lane and the enemy stops hitting you, commit to trading immediately or the bar starts emptying. Grit management is what separates good Sett players from great ones.

Matchups

Counters & Matchups

Sett struggles against true-damage dealers who bypass his tankiness, long-range kiting champions, and enemies with abilities that counter his W or R suppression. He dominates passive scaling champions who need time to come online.

Loses Against
Vayne
Vayne Hard
Vayne's Silver Bolts true damage shreds through Sett's HP regardless of armor, and her Tumble kite completely negates his ability to stick onto her and fill Grit through autos.
Your only window is when Vayne is close range — use E to stun her, then immediately R before she can Tumble away. If she has Tumble available, do not commit.
Fiora
Fiora Hard
Fiora's W Riposte can block your W Haymaker entirely, completely negating your primary damage tool and reflecting the stun back on you. Her true damage also bypasses your Grit-fueled tankiness.
Bait out Riposte with an E or auto before casting W. Fiora needs to predict the W to block it — mix up your timing and spacing so the block is harder to land.
Camille
Camille Hard
Camille's Q true damage cuts through Sett's resistances, and her E hook prevents you from dumping W safely. Her ultimate traps you in an isolated zone where she has the movement advantage.
Build Sterak's Gage as your second item into Camille — the shield helps you survive her burst long enough to retaliate. Avoid fighting her when Q is off cooldown.
Wins Against
Nasus
Nasus Easy
Nasus needs to stack Q peacefully to become a threat. Sett's sustained aggression and movement speed from Q makes it trivial to zone him off every cs, keeping his stacks permanently low.
Absorb his E poke to fill your Grit, then dump W on him every time he steps up. Keep him under half health and he cannot safely cs. Do not let the game go to 35 minutes.
Malphite
Malphite Easy
Sett W's true damage completely bypasses Malphite's armor stacking fantasy. Grabbing Malphite with R and throwing him into the enemy team also backfires — his ult lands on his own team.
Do not let him stack armor freely. Trade often to deny his passive shield regeneration, and in teamfights, grab him with R to throw him away from your team's carries.
Garen
Garen Easy
Garen is predictable and immobile — Sett easily absorbs his short all-in rotation and retaliates with a full-Grit W true damage nuke that Garen cannot escape.
Let Garen spin on you to fill your Grit bar, then immediately W once he finishes his combo. His silence does not stop W from being cast if you are already committed to the animation.
