Thresh is the most versatile support in League of Legends. His hook, lantern, Flay, and R wall provide offense, defense, CC, and utility simultaneously. He has the highest skill ceiling of any support and rewards every hour of practice with more carry potential.
Abilities
Skills Overview
P
Damnation
Passive
Thresh can harvest the souls of enemies that die near him, permanently granting him Armor and Ability Power.
Damnation: souls from dead enemies permanently increase armor and AP. Never miss a soul — auto-attack dying minions to collect them. Each soul makes you tankier forever.
Q
Death Sentence
Skillshot · Hook · Pull-In
Thresh binds an enemy in chains and pulls them toward him. Activating this ability a second time pulls Thresh to the enemy.
CD: 19/16.5/14/11.5/9 · Cost: 70
Q has a 0.5s delay before hooking — aim at where enemies WILL be, not where they are. Walk toward the target immediately after hooking to reel them in faster with the second Q press.
W
Dark Passage
Lantern · Ally Dash · Area
Thresh throws out a lantern that shields nearby allied Champions from damage. Allies can click the lantern to dash to Thresh.
CD: 21/20/19/18/17 · Cost: 50/55/60/65/70
W lantern lets allies click it to dash to you. Throw it under an ally who is being chased — they click it and flash to safety. Communicate lantern location with pings.
E
Flay
Knockback/Pull · AoE
Thresh's attacks wind up, dealing more damage the longer he waits between attacks. When activated, Thresh sweeps his chain, knocking all enemies hit in the direction of the blow.
CD: 13/12.25/11.5/10.75/10 · Cost: 60/65/70/75/80
Flay has two modes: swipe forward to knock AWAY, swipe backward to pull TOWARD you. After landing Q hook, use backward Flay to pull them further in for maximum displacement.
R
The Box
AoE · Slow · Wall
A prison of walls that slow and deal damage if broken.
CD: 120/100/80 · Cost: 100
R creates a prison wall that slows and damages. Use it to cut off enemy escape routes, trap hooked targets, or separate enemies from their teammates.

Gameplay
How to Play Thresh
01
Early Game
Hook Patterns and Soul Collection
- Collect every soul — auto-attack dying minions before your ADC last-hits. Each soul permanently increases your armor and AP.
- Practice hook angles — Q from behind minions, hook over walls, and hook at the edge of ADC's attack range.
- After landing Q, immediately press Q again to reel the target toward you — then Flay backward to pull them further.
- W lantern under your ADC the moment you see them in danger — they click it and teleport to safety.
- Flay forward (away from you) to knock enemies back from your ADC — Flay backward to pull hooked targets closer.
02
Mid Game
Roam and Pick with Death Sentence
- Roam with your hook — a Thresh hook in the river is a free kill for your jungler.
- Lantern your jungler into secure positions during invades — they dash to the lantern for surprise engages.
- R box cuts off retreating enemies — use it in doorways and paths to trap enemies trying to escape.
- Track enemy support positioning — if Soraka or Lux stands near a minion wave, hook through the gap.
- Dragon and Baron fights: hook the enemy jungler smiting the objective — separate them from the goal.
03
Late Game
Hook Carries, Lantern Allies, Box to Win
- Your hook is the most valuable ability in any teamfight — land it on their carry and the fight is won.
- W lantern reaches across the map — throw it to allies who are being chased for an instant escape.
- Flay auto-weaving deals significant damage with your soul stacks — auto between abilities during fights.
- R box in chokepoints is devastating — place it in narrow corridors where enemies can't avoid every wall.
- You have the most CC in the game — Q hook → E pull → R box → wait for Q cooldown → repeat.
Teamfighting
How to Teamfight as Thresh
Thresh teamfights revolve around the hook. A hook on their carry followed by Flay pull and R box creates a guaranteed kill. Between hooks, peel with W lantern and Flay knockback to protect your backline.
1
Pre-Fight — Find the Hook Angle
Before engage
01
Position for a hook angle on their carry — not their tank. A hooked ADC is a dead ADC.
02
Watch for mispositioned enemies — a hook only needs one moment of exposure.
03
Lantern your most aggressive ally — they click it to dash forward and start the fight.
Never hook their tank. A hook on Malphite or Garen is wasted — it just gives them free engage. Only hook carries, assassins, or high-value targets.
2
Engage — Q Hook, E Pull, R Box
Fight opening
01
Q hook their carry — press Q again immediately to reel them in.
02
E Flay backward to pull them even further toward your team.
03
R box around the hooked target — they're trapped between your team and the wall.
04
Activate Locket — your team rushes in during the lockdown window.
3
Aftermath — Peel and Repeat
Mid-fight
01
W lantern your ADC if they're being dived — instant teleport to safety.
02
E Flay forward to knock divers away from your backline.
03
Reset Q CD and hook again — Thresh can CC multiple targets across an extended fight.
After landing Q, walk toward the target while pressing Q again. Reeling yourself toward the target AND pulling them toward you creates much faster displacement than just pressing Q.
Tips & Tricks
Advanced Mechanics & Hidden Tech
Advanced mechanics for Thresh.
Basic
Collect Every Soul
Never miss a soul. Auto-attack dying minions 1 second before they die — you collect the soul before your ADC last-hits. Each soul permanently boosts your armor and AP throughout the game.
Basic
Two-Tap Q Reeling
After Q hook lands: press Q again immediately to reel the target in faster. You can also walk toward the target yourself while pressing Q — both motions stack for maximum displacement speed.
Intermediate
Flay Direction
E Flay swipe direction matters: swipe forward (away from you) to knockback, swipe backward (toward you) to pull. After Q hook, swipe backward to pull targets deeper into your team.
Intermediate
Lantern Timing
Throw W UNDER the ally being chased, not at them. The lantern travels to the location — if they're running, lead the throw to where they'll be. Allies have 6 seconds to click it.
Intermediate
Hook Angles
Practice hooking around minion waves — aim at the gap between minions where the enemy will walk. Also practice wall hooks: hooks from over walls are nearly undodgeable.
Advanced
Flay Auto Weaving
Flay applies bonus physical damage on the next auto after activation. Always auto immediately after Flay for the bonus damage. With high soul count, this damage is significant.
Advanced
R Box Trap Combos
Use R box after Q pull to trap the hooked target between the wall and your team. Position the box so one wall is behind the target — they're caught between box walls and your team.
Basic
Lantern Engage
W lantern lets allies dash to it. Throw lantern into an enemy pack so your ally can dash in for an engage. Use it for safe engages on diving allies who need positioning.
Matchups
Counters & Matchups
Thresh struggles against champions that can dodge his hook or block it with CC immunity. He excels against immobile carries and supports who can't avoid his hooks.

Loses Against
Black Shield absorbs Q hook entirely — your entire kit revolves around landing Q, and Morgana negates it with one ability. You have no CC to follow up with once Q is blocked.
Bait Black Shield by fake-engaging repeatedly. The moment it expires (5-second window), immediately hook. Never hook an active Black Shield.
Ezreal E arcane shift has a shorter cooldown than your Q at full CDR. He can blink out of every hook attempt and poke you from safety.
Hook immediately after Ezreal uses E — he's committed for the next 13 seconds. Predict when he uses it and engage in that window.
Janna R knocks you back and cancels your follow-up after hooks. Her shield and heals make kills impossible and her R cooldown is frustratingly effective against your engage attempts.
Hook Janna directly — she uses R to peel for her ADC but not herself. Time R casts around Janna's 120-second cooldown.
Wins Against
Draven has no reliable dodge for your hook and your Flay passive damage with soul stacks deals massive damage to squishies like him in early trades.
Hook Draven while he's catching axes — he can't dodge hooks while focused on catching. The hook disrupts his axes too.
Kalista's passive lets her hop constantly, but she hops in predictable directions. Anticipate her next hop and hook to where she's jumping.
Kalista jumps in a consistent pattern. After 3-4 hops, you can predict exactly where she'll land next. Hook that location.
Miss Fortune has no mobility and cannot dodge your hook. Your Q → E pull → R box combo completely negates her R Bullet Time ultimate.
Hook MF during her R channel — she cannot move during Bullet Time. The hook cancels it and she's pulled into your team.
