Mel is a high-ceiling poke mage whose W Rebuttal is one of the most unique abilities in the game — it destroys incoming projectiles and fires them back at enemies, completely invalidating entire champion kits. In the right hands she wins mid-lane matchups through sheer projectile denial while building Overwhelm stacks for explosive damage. Scales into a teamfight powerhouse with Golden Eclipse.

Skills Overview

P
Searing Brilliance
Searing Brilliance
Passive
Whenever Mel uses an ability, she gains three bonus projectiles (up to nine maximum) on her next attack. When Mel deals damage through an ability or attack, she applies Overwhelm, which can stack infinitely. If the enemy is hit by Mel with enough Overwhelm damage, the stacks are consumed to execute the target.
Searing Brilliance generates stacking Overwhelm on enemies you damage. At max stacks your basic attacks deal massive bonus magic damage. Maintain constant Q pressure to build stacks before all-ins.
Q
Radiant Volley
Radiant Volley
Radiant Volley · Fan of Rays · Poke
Mel fires a barrage of projectiles that explode around a target location, dealing damage repeatedly to enemies within the area.
CD: 10/9/8/7/6 · Cost: 70/75/80/85/90
Radiant Volley fires multiple beams in a wide fan. At max range the beams spread — aim at choke points or walk the enemy into the spread. The center beam deals the most damage.
W
Rebuttal
Rebuttal
Rebuttal · Projectile Block & Reflect
Mel forms a barrier around herself that reflects enemy projectiles back at the attacker, prevents her from taking damage, and grants her movement speed.
CD: 35/32/29/26/23 · Cost: 80/60/40/20/0
Rebuttal is your identity. It destroys enemy projectiles and returns them as attacks. Use it reactively against: Ezreal Q, Lux E and R, Caitlyn Q and R, Xerath Q, Vex Q and W, Zed R shadows. Practice the timing — it has a short window.
E
Solar Snare
Solar Snare
Solar Snare · Root · Long Range
Mel fires a radiant orb forward, rooting those at its center while the area around it slows enemies and deals damage over time.
CD: 11/10.5/10/9.5/9 · Cost: 50/60/70/80/90
Solar Snare is a long-range root. Use it to lock down enemies after W-reflecting a stun or snare back at them — the double-CC is devastating. Land E after your Passive stacks are built for an execute burst.
R
Golden Eclipse
Golden Eclipse
Golden Eclipse · Channel · AoE Execute
Mel strikes all enemies marked with Overwhelm regardless of their distance from her, dealing additional damage for each stack of Overwhelm.Ranks of Golden Eclipse increase Overwhelm's damage.
CD: 120/100/80 · Cost: 100
Golden Eclipse channels briefly then erupts in a massive radius. Best used after Solar Snare has rooted the target. The damage scales with enemy missing HP — save it for post-trade executes, not openers.

Gameplay

How to Play Mel

Mel's lane phase is defined by safe Q poke and Rebuttal pressure. She denies aggressive engage with the threat of W and stacks Overwhelm for mid-game spike items.

01
Early Game
Poke and Deny Engage
  • Fire Q at the enemy mid-laner every time they step up. The wide fan hits reliably at short-medium range.
  • Threaten W constantly — enemies who know Rebuttal reflects projectiles will hesitate to use their key abilities. This denial of agency is Mel's strongest early tool.
  • Don't use W proactively — save it reactively for dangerous enemy skill shots. Pre-cast W is a wasted reflect window.
  • Back for Tear + Amplifying Tome at 1100 gold. Mana is your only real limitation early.
02
Mid Game
Stack Overwhelm and Roam
  • Stacked Overwhelm + Liandry's first item transforms your Q poke into meaningful damage. Start trading more aggressively.
  • E → R execute pattern: root an enemy with Solar Snare, immediately Q → R. The execute threshold on Golden Eclipse means it hits harder the lower they are.
  • Roam bot to punish squishes with your Overwhelm stacks. One Q poke plus Comet can drop ADCs to execute range.
  • Wards are mandatory — Mel has no dash. W can block some gap-closers but she needs vision to avoid being caught.
03
Late Game
Teamfight Carry
  • In teamfights, open with Q fan on the highest-priority target to build Overwhelm stacks instantly.
  • Save W for the enemy ADC's ult or marksman's key skill shot — a reflected Jhin 4th shot or MF bullet is game-changing.
  • E + R the enemy fed carry. Golden Eclipse at 40%+ Overwhelm stacks should delete any non-tank.
  • Position behind your frontline — Mel has no escape if she's caught in melee range.

Teamfighting

How to Teamfight as Mel

Mel's teamfight role is long-range Overwhelm poke, Rebuttal denial of key enemy skill shots, and executing priority targets with E + R.

1
Pre-Fight — Stack Overwhelm
Before engage
01
Q poke before the fight begins — hit the highest-priority target with 2-3 Q beams to build Overwhelm stacks before the engage.
02
Identify projectile threats — note which enemies have reflectable ultimates (Jinx R, Caitlyn R, MissFortune R) and prepare W timing.
03
Position at max Q range — Mel cannot function if she's within melee range. Stay at the back edge of the fight.
2
Fight — Reflect and Execute
Fight opening
01
Use W on the biggest incoming threat — reflect an ADC ultimate or assassin gap-closer back at them. One reflect can swing the entire fight.
02
E + R the fed carry once stacks are built — Solar Snare root into Golden Eclipse at low HP executes anyone.
03
Keep Q fanning between ability casts — constant beam pressure applies Overwhelm to multiple targets for follow-up kills.
3
Aftermath — Clean Up
Post-fight
01
E fleeing enemies — Solar Snare's long range can root runners from across the map.
02
Q the tankline — Overwhelm + Liandry burns tanks who survived the teamfight.
03
Reposition after W — once Rebuttal is on cooldown you're vulnerable. Move toward safety after the reflect.

Tips & Tricks

Advanced Mechanics & Hidden Tech

Mel's ceiling is entirely about Rebuttal knowledge — knowing exactly which enemy abilities can be reflected and timing W to catch them mid-cast.

Basic
W Reacts to Projectiles Only
Rebuttal only blocks and reflects projectile-based abilities. Melee strikes, Darius spin, Vi punch, Akali combos — none of these are blocked. Focus your W on ranged skill shots: Lux Q/E/R, Ezreal Q/R, Caitlyn Q/R, Vex Q, Syndra Q, Jinx rockets.
Basic
Q Fan at Short Range Concentrates Damage
Radiant Volley's beams spread as they travel. At close range all beams can hit one target for maximum damage. At long range they spread — use long range for poke, short range for all-in burst.
Intermediate
E into R for Execute
Golden Eclipse's damage increases the lower the target's HP. Always Solar Snare first (E), then Q to stack Overwhelm, then R to execute. Never open with R — it deals much less damage at full HP.
Intermediate
Overwhelm Stacks Reset Between Champions
Passive stacks are per-champion. Switching targets resets your Overwhelm progress. Pick one priority target in a fight and focus Q beams on them until full stacks, then execute with E + R.
Advanced
Reflect ADC Ultimates
Miss Fortune R and Jinx Super Mega Death Rocket are both reflectable. Position yourself in the path of their R cast and use W to send it back. A reflected MF R in the middle of her team is a free teamfight win.
Advanced
W Bait Aggressive Supports
Blitzcrank and Nautilus hook are projectiles — both can be reflected. Walk aggressively up to bait the hook, then W it back. A reflected hook on a nearby ally or returned to sender creates massive kill windows.

Matchups

Counters & Matchups

Mel loses to melee assassins and champions who engage without projectiles. She dominates projectile-heavy compositions where Rebuttal invalidates entire kits.

Click any matchup to expand tips & how to play against them
Loses Against
Zed
Zed Hard
Zed's R is not a projectile — it's a blink. His shadow play bypasses W entirely and his burst combo kills Mel before she can E or R.
Build Zhonya's and activate it the instant his R lands. Request jungle pressure — Mel cannot duel Zed solo.
Akali
Akali Hard
Akali's shroud and gap-close are not projectiles. She can dive Mel freely and the invisibility prevents Solar Snare from landing.
Save E for when she exits her shroud. Keep your jungler's attention on mid — Akali post-6 will kill Mel every time she overextends.
Katarina
Katarina Hard
Katarina's kit is entirely non-projectile. W reflect does nothing against her daggers and she resets through kills before Mel can respond.
Build Zhonya's. Interrupt Katarina R with Solar Snare — it's the only window Mel has to stop the reset chain.
Wins Against
Ezreal
Ezreal Easy
Ezreal's entire kit is projectiles. His Q, W, and R can all be reflected. One reflected Trueshot Barrage in a teamfight erases his team.
Hold W for his R. He cannot play aggressively once he knows every skill shot can come back at him. Force him to use R offensively.
Lux
Lux Easy
Every Lux ability is a projectile. Reflected Q binds her ally, reflected E detonates on them, reflected R deletes her from the game.
W her Q or R. You win any 1v1 since her entire pattern — Q into E into R — can be sent back.
Vex
Vex Easy
Vex's Q and W fear are projectiles. Mel's Q poke out-ranges Vex's fear range and W neutralizes her key abilities.
Stand at max Q range. Vex cannot fear you at that distance and your beams stack Overwhelm freely. Reflect her Q at her to punish any poke attempt.
Team Comp

Best Synergies

Amumu
CC Chain
Amumu
Amumu's R stuns enemies in a tight cluster for Mel to stack Overwhelm charges and fire full R executes on grouped immobile targets. Amumu's engage makes Mel's E root and R landing trivially easy.
Jinx
Follow-Up
Jinx
Mel's Overwhelm execute damage and E root set up kill opportunities for Jinx to trigger her Excited passive and chain resets. Both champions scale into late game and thrive in the same grouped-fight scenarios.
Malphite
Engage
Malphite
Malphite's R knockup clusters enemies for Mel to land guaranteed E roots and R executes on airborne targets who cannot dodge. Malphite's frontline presence lets Mel position freely for maximum Overwhelm stacking range.
Twisted Fate
Pick
Twisted Fate
Twisted Fate's Gold Card stun locks targets for Mel's E root plus R execute window. Both are mid-lane mages who create global pressure and pick enemies who overextend across the map.
