The Story of Rakan
Rakan is a Vastaya of the Lhotlan tribe — feathered, magnetic, and constitutionally incapable of performing anything without turning it into a performance. He is a bard, a dancer, and a charmer whose magical abilities work through movement and beauty: he creates shields and heals injuries through choreography, distracts and enchants through presence, and generally accomplishes practical goals through means that look like showing off. This is not an affectation. He genuinely experiences helping people as something that should be enjoyable.
He met Xayah at a Noxian political event neither of them was supposed to be at and was immediately and completely gone on her. Xayah is fierce, political, and convinced that the Vastaya's survival depends on resistance and sacrifice. Rakan is convinced that the Vastaya's survival depends on someone keeping the morale high and the dancing going. They are not wrong about each other. They are also completely unable to stay away from each other.
He follows her into danger not because he is reckless but because he is entirely clear-eyed about the value of what she is doing and his own role in supporting it. He is not the strategist of their partnership. He is the person who makes the strategy survivable — who pulls people back from the brink, who finds the gap, who makes the escape possible through sheer kinetic joy. He is also, genuinely, one of the most powerful magical beings in Ionia. People who mistake the dancing for frivolity do not usually get a second chance to recalibrate.
