The Story of Karma
Karma holds the memories of every Karma who came before her — each time the previous Karma dies, the spiritual mantle passes to the next, and with it come the accumulated experiences of all the predecessors. She carries centuries of wisdom, decades of grief, and the particular psychological weight of being an individual who is also a vessel for an unbroken succession of other individuals. She knows things she did not personally learn. She has lost people she did not personally know. The line between herself and the tradition she embodies is not always clear.
The Noxian invasion of Ionia forced the question of how Karma's tradition — built on balance, inner peace, and the careful stewardship of Ionia's spiritual health — responds when the thing threatening that health is an imperial army. Her predecessors counseled patience and negotiation; the current Karma watched patience fail. She made a choice the tradition had never required before: she fought. The power she accessed in that moment was greater than anything previous Karmas had described, and it came at a cost she is still processing.
She leads now — both the spiritual tradition and, in practice, a significant portion of Ionia's political response to ongoing threats. She does this with the weight of everyone who came before her watching, with the knowledge that her choices will be inherited by whoever comes after her, and with the personal knowledge that she is more than the tradition and the tradition is more than she is. The balance she maintains is internal as much as external.
