Naafiri

the Hound of a Hundred Bites

Across the sands of Shurima, a chorus of howls rings out. It is the call of the dune hounds, voracious predators who form packs and compete for the right to hunt in these barren lands. Among them, one pack stands above all, for they are driven not only by canine instincts, but by the ancient power of the Darkin.

Origin & Background

The Story of Naafiri

Naafiri is a Darkin — one of the ancient god-warriors of Shurima who was imprisoned inside a weapon after their war against the Targonians corrupted them beyond redemption. Most Darkin were imprisoned in swords or axes, individual weapons containing individual wills. Naafiri was imprisoned differently: across a pack of blades, her consciousness distributed through them and activated when the pack bond — the shared awareness of the hounds who carry them — brings them together.

She is a pack predator at a fundamental level in ways that other Darkin are not. She experiences existence as a collective: the awareness of each hound is part of her awareness, the pack's hunting instincts are her instincts, and when she is most herself she is simultaneously all of them. This is not comfortable in the way that individual consciousness is comfortable, but it is how she was remade by her imprisonment, and she has built a self from it rather than fighting what she became.

What she wants is what all Darkin want: liberation, the return of her full power, and the freedom to pursue the purpose she was created for. What makes her distinctive is that the pack metaphor extends to how she sees the other Darkin — they should be together, coordinated, a pack hunting as one rather than solitary predators operating on individual agendas. Whether the other Darkin share this vision is something she intends to establish through force of will and, where necessary, force of blades.
